The VW-9.1/(0.05-0.1)-5 is a corrosion-resistant, oil-free reciprocating compressor engineered for low-pressure natural gas and associated gas containing chloride ions below 300 ppm. It handles gas streams that include saturated water, dichloromethane, and up to 3.4 percent chlorinated hydrocarbons. The unit compresses 500 Nm³/h of gas from an inlet pressure of 5-10 KPa(G) at 25-40°C to a discharge pressure of 0.5 MPa(G), driven by a 55 kW electric motor. With approximate dimensions of 3500 × 2200 × 1800 mm and a weight of approximately 5 tons, the skid-mounted package fits compact sites with limited footprint.
This compressor serves oil and gas field operators for associated gas recovery, shale gas and coalbed methane exploitation, and LNG facilities for BOG (boil-off gas) recovery, pre-liquefaction boosting, and peak shaving. The oil-free design ensures the compressed gas remains free of lubricating oil contamination, preserving gas quality for downstream processing and pipeline injection.
The compressor uses a V-type, water-cooled, oil-free, 2-row, 2-stage double-acting piston configuration. Cylinders are cast from corrosion-resistant cast iron formulated to withstand chloride ion concentrations up to 300 ppm. Axial-type air valves are installed in each stage for high volumetric efficiency and straightforward maintenance access. Valve plates and springs are selected for compatibility with wet, chlorinated gas streams to reduce corrosion-related failures.
A double middle-body structure physically separates the crankcase from the compression cylinders. This design prevents crankcase lubricating oil from migrating into the gas stream, ensuring oil-free gas delivery. The middle-body includes a vented drain chamber to collect and discharge any condensate or leakage. Piston rods pass through packing cases with PTFE-based sealing rings suitable for the gas composition. The piston rod thread protective sleeve (patent ZL 2017 2 1907021.7) and piston ring support device (patent ZL 2018 2 0294776.2) are incorporated to extend service life under corrosive conditions.
Cooling is provided by a closed water circuit with shell-and-tube interstage and aftercoolers. The control panel includes local indicators for stage pressures, temperatures, and motor current, with automatic shutdown for high discharge temperature, low cooling water flow, and motor overload. For outdoor or hazardous-area installation, the electrical system can be configured to explosion-proof standards such as ExdIIBT4.

The VW-9.1 supports wellhead pressurization, associated gas recovery from oil production separators, and gas gathering in marginal fields where inlet pressure is low. Its corrosion-resistant construction handles wet gas with chloride content, reducing the need for pre-treatment equipment upstream.
In LNG facilities, the compressor recovers boil-off gas from storage tanks, boosts gas pressure for pre-liquefaction, and supports peak shaving operations. The oil-free delivery protects downstream liquefaction equipment and cold boxes from oil fouling.

The compressor design has been deployed in the Akimom Gas Field in Ukraine, the Alibek Oilfield in southern Kazakhstan, and the Ningxia Zhongneng project in China. These installations cover associated gas recovery and low-pressure gas boosting in both onshore and plant environments.
The design incorporates four utility model patents of piston rod thread protective sleeve (ZL 2017 2 1907021.7), piston ring support device (ZL 2018 2 0294776.2), range piston for symmetrical balanced compressors (ZL 2017 2 190177.0), and integrated long-short double compartment (ZL 2018 2 0294762.0). Units are manufactured under a special equipment production license and undergo hydrostatic testing and no-load running tests before shipment.
